FEATURED ARTIST #9: Cupids

The featured artist this week is CUPIDS with their punchy rock track Kickin’ In.

I could definitely imagine them on Radio X.

Lucy Hunt, our guest this week from Radio X, praised the track, saying that not only would she have it on her iPod and listen to it frequently, but that she could hear it being played on Radio X. She really enjoyed the vocal layering and the great guitar. Stephen agreed wholeheartedly about them being very Radio X, claiming that he’d definitely see them live and that he loved the Blur-like guitar. Both he and Lucy gave CUPIDS a 9 out of 10, the highest score of the day.

George dug the attitude, calling “Kickin’ In” both “punchy and exciting.” He also agreed that, like Stephen said, they’d be quite exciting to see live. He was a fan, giving them a 7.7 out of a possible 10. That left CUPIDS with a total score of 25.7 out of 30, the highest score on any episode of the Postbox yet. That’s quite an impressive feat!

It’s safe to say that the entire Postbox staff was blown away by  CUPIDS. They’re obviously going to be huge, but when they’re not ‘kickin’ it’ (pun intended), here’s what else these Northern lads have been up to.

Previously known as The Gramotones, the Manchester four-piece released a string of tracks last fall under their new name of CUPIDS. “Confession Box” is a standout, with haunting harmonies that really showcase the band’s musicality and ’60s influence right off the bat. It’s got a psychedelic vibe reminiscent of The Black Angels and harmonies that surpass the greats. It’s retro and cool and a completely different vibe than “Kickin’ In.” We’re obsessed.

George and Stephen both said they’d love to see CUPIDS live, and if this live version of “No One Talks” proves anything, it’s that they are absolutely electric in person. They spent the fall touring with Blossoms, and their sound fills the room and they totally own the stage. The track itself is big, with a groovy beat that you can’t help but bob your head to. The back-and-forth vocals at the end is a nice surprise, and really takes the song into an interesting direction. If you want to catch CUPIDS live, they’ve got a few gigs coming up in Manchester and Liverpool (you can find more info here & on their Facebook page).

Unfortunately, we can’t post every CUPIDS song that we love, but we do have a few honorable mentions, which include the downtempo, Nirvana-like “A Study In Extremes” and the fast paced & cheeky “Money.” But even though they’re not known as the Gramotones anymore, we can’t help but leave you with this slick rendition of “Heard It Through The Grapevine.” What can we say, we love a good cover, and they don’t disappoint.

Be sure to follow CUPIDS on Twitter, Facebook, and Soundcloud to stay up to date with new tunes, gig announcements, and a bunch more because these guys are going places. And while you’re at it, be sure to follow and like The Postbox Podcast, too. You can listen to the full episode below, and don’t be afraid to tell us what you think!
